Physical Education

Vision:

 

Our high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically demanding activities.

 

We design our curriculum with our core values (ambition, togetherness, opportunity, respect, curiosity and happiness) in mind to ensure it is fully inclusive of every child enabling them to thrive and be the best they can be. It teaches core skills and builds on these, allowing children to apply their knowledge in competitive sport both in and out of school and evaluate their performance.

 

We provide many opportunities over the course of an extended school day for pupils to be physical in a way that supports their health and fitness and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.

 

We see physical development as essential to children’s development. Through our physical development programme, we hope to capture all of the children’s natural enthusiasm for movement, helping them to develop a love of sport and exercise that they will build upon throughout their lifetime and embedding the strength and skills that they need to impact on the wider curriculum.

 

An active lifestyle is also promoted through our travel plan, as evidenced through our acquirement of a TfL STARS gold award. We work with specialised coaches across all year groups to develop and engage pupils. These, as well as attendance on PE courses and staff INSETs, support the professional development and skills of teachers.

 

The impact of PE is seen through pupil interviews, teacher/coach evaluations, data regarding active travel to and from school, attendance at clubs and from performance in competitions. The impact is also evident through gaining the School Games Gold Award from the three previous academic years.

 

Aims:

  • Give children a diverse range of physical experiences which allows them to enjoy and achieve.
  • Support all children in developing the fundamental skills of Agility, Balance and Coordination.
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of exercise and how it affects their bodies.
  • Develop the ability to work independently, in a pair or a group and to communicate with and respond positively towards others.
  • Promote an understanding of responsibility for their own safety and that of others.

 

Implementation:

 

EYFS

  • The children learn the fundamental skills of PE through the physical development aspect of the curriculum when developing their fine and gross motor skills.
  • They also have use of outdoor classrooms with a vast range of equipment, which helps them with their curiosity and problem solving.
  • At Lady Bankes Primary School we place a key focus on fine motor skills and strength as this has been identified as a barrier to learning in our school.
  • Children also have opportunities to use physical activity to support other aspects of curriculum.
  • In the spring term, we use our outside providers to help with the transition of the children into the KS1 curriculum and the expectations they may face.

 

 

KS1/KS2

  • We use a company called Primary Sporting Development to assist teachers and help develop the high quality teaching of the PE curriculum.
  • Children participate in a range of after school and lunch time clubs which offer them a chance to acquire new skills in different sports, a wealth of social interaction and allow children to flourish in a range of exciting sports.
  • Children participate in sports day to further develop their social skills, helping to set them up for positive relationship building for life. These also offer the perfect opportunity to encourage those children who may not ordinarily participate in sporting activities to join in.
  • We celebrate the achievements of a wide range of sport personalities allowing all children to aspire to a role model and feel fully included and represented within their sporting education.
  • We have also used sport to help raise money for various charities as it allows for children to express themselves in other ways outside of the classroom.
  • Mindfulness and emotional health play a big part in the way in which we deliver our sporting lessons; we use a wide range of teachings to allow the children to self-regulate their own emotions.
  • Within the children’s PSHE lessons we place a large focus on healthy eating and ensure all children know how to keep both their minds and bodies healthy. Whether this be through mindfulness, exercise or a brain gym active break.
  • We have a wide variety of sports teams, meaning the children can take pride in representing their school and displaying their talents – we have been extremely successful with our Athletics team when competing in the London Youth Games, Quad Kids competition.
